Important researchers in the field of Psychoanalysis, engaged in the clinical work which deals with the parents/baby bonds, have wondered about the effects of speech on babies; about the knowing and the not-knowing that is necessarily implicit in such bonds. The effects of speech on the body led Anna O. to define psychoanalysis as a talking cure – the cure through speech of the hysteric to whom Freud listened, just as he listened to the baby's cry, worried as he was with the helplessness which marks the birth of a human being. This paper takes its starting point from the reading of Freudian texts which theorize the concept of cry, the first experience of satisfaction, the need for the specific action towards the installation of the drive circuit and the emergence of desire. Freud's answers, enriched by the contributions of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and concepts such as those of the imaginary, the symbolic, the real, maternal function and paternal function, the Other, the object a – forged throughout lectures, articles and seminars – provide sound bases to stress the importance of speech (language) in the subjective constitution. Texts by psychoanalysts Marie-Christine Laznik and Julieta Jerusalinsky have set the tone for the path chosen in this study, to the extent they lend themselves to the discussion and the establishment of some articulations of Freudian and Lacanian concepts and their clinical incidence, especially for the presentation of some fragments concerning the treatment of a four-year old child at a public hospital. Based on such a case, this paper reflects on the importance of an early intervention, which can be made viaible through investment in the formation of pediatricians, enabling them to detect problems in the parents/baby bonds and to set-up treatment services. The title question, considering that the bonds of the baby with the Other are effected through language and that, therefore, the speech of such Other does have effects on the baby, may, only after the path having been trodden, disregard the question mark
