This study aims to investigate how students in a class of 9th grade in a public school in the southern zone in São Paulo city perceive their learning while doing computer-mediated activities. Departing from the diffusion and expansion of technology used by society, a task based on genre was applied to the 9th grade class of the elementary school II to investigate the impact of the computer use as a mediator in teaching English classes. The theoretical basis lies in the social interactionist view of language and teaching-learning process (Vygotsky, 1984), the National Curricular Parameters (PCN, 1998), that recommend the inclusion of technological resources in teaching, the notion of task (Nunan, 1989 and Willis, 1996) and the pedagogical proposal of implementation of genre in the classroom (Ramos, 2004). The methodology that guided the work is a case study, and the context of the work was a public school located in the southern part of São Paulo city, involving the teacher and 38 students. Data collection were collected by questionnaires, classroom observation and application of the task. The results found that there is a shortfall in the school environment to create tasks that make sense to the student, they are related to the student's social life and, above all, to integrate computer use
