Hospitalizations due to falls among elderly Brazilians and related costs under the Public Health System

Resumo: | The aim of this research was to analyze the hospitalizations for falls among elderly Brazilians and related costs under the Public Health System. Directed study of secondary data published by the Ministry of Health online form by the Department of Health System Information, related to morbidity due to falls involving elderly residents in Brazil from 2005 to 2010. The data analysis was made through descriptive statistics (absolute frequencies and percentages) according to the variables: gender, age, health macro-regions, average time hospital stay and hospital admission authorization value paid (AIH). 399,681 hospital admissions were analyzed by falls in elderly Brazilians, and 59.781% occurred in females. The total value of AIH paid was R $ 464,874,275.91, and that total 59.66% of these expenditures were intended to females. We realize the importance of health professionals as health promoter in order to support falls prevention policies. |

O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi analisar as internações hospitalares por quedas em idosos brasileiros, e os custos correspondentes no âmbito do Sistema Único de Saúde. Realizado estudo envolvendo dados secundários publicados pelo Ministério da Saúde de forma on line pelo Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde, referente à morbidade decorrente de quedas, envolvendo idosos residentes no Brasil de 2005 a 2010. A análise dos dados se deu por meio de estatística descritiva (frequências absolutas e percentuais), segundo as variáveis: sexo, faixa etária, macrorregiões de saúde, tempo médio de permanência hospitalar e valor de Autorização de Internação Hospitalar pagas (AIH). Foram analisadas 399.681 internações hospitalares por quedas em idosos brasileiros, sendo que 59,781% ocorreram em pessoas do sexo feminino. O valor total de AIH pagas foi de R$ 464.874.275,91 e, desse valor total, 59,66% desses gastos destinaram-se ao sexo feminino. Percebe-se a importância do profissional de saúde enquanto promotor de saúde, com vistas a subsidiar políticas de prevenção de quedas.
