Resumo: This article presents aspects related to the life of ‘Padre Vitor’, a black individual who was born free in 1827, in the south of Minas Gerais, where he had a distinguished role as priest and teacher. After his death, in 1905, began a movement of cult to his image giving rise to a process of canonization. His canonization continues to advance and along with it is affirming his image as an ex-slave who has attained holiness. Slavery and holiness are contradictory aspects within the trajectory of ‘Padre Vitor’. We approach this contradiction by portraying it outside the perspective represented by the idea of slave and saint, that is, we seek to recover its process of formation and action treating it as a human being who acted from the conditions and possibilities inscribed in Brazil, of the nineteenth century.

Después de su muerte, en 1905, comenzó un movimiento de culto a su imagen dando lugar a um proceso de canonización. Su canonización continúa avanzando y junto com ella está afirmando su imagen como um exesclavo que há alcanzado la santidad. La esclavitud y la santidad son aspectos contradictorios dentro de la trayectoria Del ‘Padre Vitor’. Abordamos esta contradicción representando la fuera de la perspectiva representada por la idea de esclavo y santo, es decir, buscamos recuperar su proceso de formación y acción, tratándolo como un ser humano que actuó dentro de las condiciones y posibilidades inscritas en Brasil, de El siglo diecinueve.Este artigo apresenta aspectos relacionados à vida de ‘Padre Vitor’, um indivíduo negro que nasceu livre, em 1827, no sul de Minas Gerais, onde teve destacada atuação como padre e professor. Após a sua morte, em 1905, iniciou-se um movimento de culto a sua imagem dando origem a um processo de canonização. Sua canonização segue avançando e junto com ela vai se afirmando sua imagem como um ex-escravo que atingiu a santidade. Escravidão e santidade são aspectos contraditórios dentro da trajetória de ‘Padre Vitor’.
