Resumo: This article discusses Jonathan Serrano’s renewal proposal forthe teaching of History in the first decades of the Twentieth-century. We focus on his career as a student and teacher atColégio Pedro II, his concept of History and History teaching,and the importance that he attributed on this discipline. Theinstitution assured him the necessary prestige to enter theeducational debates of the period. We argue that his efforts todefend the renewal, as a path to improve history education in thecountry, preserving the moral and social values obtained at thePedro II School, is correlated to his concept of history, andshould be read under the light of the process of recastingBrazilian education in the early 1930s.

Enfocamos su trayectoria como alumno yprofesor del Colegio Pedro II, su concepción de historia y de laenseñanza de historia, y a la importancia atribuida a ese saber. Elcolegio garantizó el prestigio necesario para ingresar en losdebates educacionales del período. Argumentamos que elesfuerzo de ese profesor, en defender la renovación comocamino para la mejora de la educación histórica en el país,mediante la preservación de los valores y preceptos morales ysociales cultivados en la institución, está relacionado con suconcepción de historia y que debe ser comprendida a través delproceso de reformulación de la enseñanza brasileña en losprimeros años de la década de 1930.Este artigo aborda a proposta de renovação do ensino de história, apresentada por Jonathas Serrano nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Enfocamos sua trajetória como aluno e mestre doColégio Pedro II, sua concepção de história e de ensino de história, e a importância que reputava a esse saber. A referida instituição assegurou o prestígio necessário para ingressar nos debates educacionais do período.
