Resumo: This text is the first result of research on the history of the teaching profession in Brazil, focusing on the state of Rio de Janeiro. The object of study is the implementation of two institutionalized centers of teacher education: the teacher training school of the court, in 1880, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, at that time the capital of the country, and the teacher training school of Campos, in the northern part of the state, created in 1894, at the beginning of the republican period. In this historical context, the process of modernizing the country demanded the proliferation of new ideas and an emphasis on instruction and popular education, motor forces that stand out in the construction of a civilized nation. As a consequence, investment in teaching education acquires central importance.

As a consequence, investment in teaching education acquires central importance. O presente texto traduz-se como resultado dos esforços iniciais de uma pesquisa que, na sua primeira fase, estuda a história da profissão docente no Brasil, focalizando especificamente o estado do Rio de Janeiro. O objeto do estudo refere-se à implementação de dois núcleos institucionalizados de formação de professores: a Escola Normal da Corte, em 1880, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, então capital do país, e a Escola Normal de Campos, no norte fluminense, criada em 1894, já no início do período republicano. Nesse contexto histórico, o processo de modernização do país demanda a proliferação de novas idéias e a ênfase na instrução e educação popular destacam-se como forças propulsoras para a construção de uma nação civilizada. Como conseqüência, adquire centralidade o investimento na formação do magistério.
