Resumo: The project of writing about art and religion is centered in CarlosOswald (1882-1971), an artist who has been perpetuated by itsuniqueness and historical position in the context of the arts,education and religion. This artist and his work – focusing hereon this text in the field of sacred art - compose the theme of thepresent study of art and religion. Included in the work herepresented are the ties woven between the work of the artist andthe Catholic Church in the early decades of the twentiethcentury. From the life story of Carlos Oswald, which stood outthe formative years, it was sought to understand the meaning ofhis artwork in the formation of a Catholic orientation on therelationship between religious art, culture and education inBrazil.

Se incluyen, en este trabajo,los lazos estrechados entre la actuación del artista y la IglesiaCatólica, en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. A partir de lahistoria de la vida de Carlos Oswald, en la cual se destacan losaños de formación, se ha tratado comprender el significado de sutrabajo artístico en la formación de una orientación católicasobre las relaciones entre el arte sacro, la cultura y la educaciónbrasileñas.O projeto de escrever sobre arte e religião está centrado em Carlos Oswald (1882-1971), artista que se perpetuou por sua singularidade e posição histórica no contexto das artes, da educação, da religião. Esse artista e sua obra – focalizando-se neste texto a realizada no campo da arte sacra – compõem o tema do presente estudo da arte e da religião. Incluem-se, no trabalho ora apresentado, os laços tecidos entre a atuação do artista e a Igreja Católica, nas primeiras décadas do século XX.
