Resumo: | The doctor and artist João Carlos Celestino Gomes (Ílhavo, 1899 – Lisboa, 1960) starts publishing novels with Signo de Toiro (1939). In this essay, we focus on one of its crucial themes: female homosexuality. The narrator depicts Maria Sidónia, the main character, undergoing significant emotional distress as a result of her relationship with Damiana. These two female characters are hence portrayed against a background of recurring symbolic contrasts of light and shadow. Maria Sidónia also struggles intimately to come to terms with her twofold nature of femme‑garçon, but the presence of Lúcio Ricardo, a young sculptor, will finally settle the triumph of the heterosexual norm by the end of the narrative. |
