This work presents a study on the universe of recent areas of interest of our architectural community. Built around the themes of provas finais presented by graduate students at FAUP between 1999 and 2009, this approach seeks to reflect the multiplicity of themes that characterize the contemporary architecture. At first, we reflect about the questions of undertaking research work in the field of architecture, in the academic context. Using some general bibliography, we attempt to define concepts such as research, discipline, school, teaching, architecture. We evaluate, first, the importance of conducting research for the development of the discipline, focusing, then, on the role that the schools of architecture have on its promotion among the students. Finally, we focus on the issues of interdisciplinarity and specialization in teaching architecture, noting that these are reflected in research work, specifically, on provas finais. Secondly, we proceed with the analysis of the case study, consisting of all the provas finais held in the selected period. For this, an inventory was created, with the themes chosen by the graduate students as objects of study for their provas finais. This inventory resulted in a catalogue of tables presented as an appendix. The analysis conducted is presented in two levels. First, we present the quantitative analysis of the themes, shown simultaneously with the graphics summarizing the collected data. Then, we present a qualitative analysis of the same themes, for which we selected some provas finais, as identifying examples of certain thematic groups. To this effect, we propose to speculate on current topics of the architectural discourse, thought and practice, centering this study on a specific context of time at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto.
