Resumo: The present study reports the intervention of two terracotta busts, dating to the 18th century and belonging to the Lisbon Museum. For a better understanding of the history and values of the busts, a survey of the historical context was carried out, with the purpose of helping to inform and consider the future intervention to be carried out on the pieces. During this research, the main objective was to acquire knowledge about the history of the Palácio Pombal (framing the busts in their place of origin); to make a parallelism with objects similar to the busts under study and with the decoration found in the Pombal Palace and, finally, to understand the history of the Real Fábrica de Louças ao Rato, which is the proposed place for the production of the pieces (understanding of the production techniques of the busts and and an attempt to fit them in the place of provenance). As there is no information directly related to the busts, it was important to develop and explore methodologies for collecting information, which were useful to continue this study. After understanding the historical context, extensive research was carried out on different terracotta intervention methodologies (centered on the specific intervention needs identified for the pieces in the diagnostic reports), as well as a discussion around conservation and restoration options. In parallel to this critical sense of the interventions, the previous unstable restorations, which also presented aesthetic issues, were removed and the intervention was carried out. It was not always possible to choose non-invasive and reversible intervention methodologies to guarantee the stability of the busts, but there was always this concern to facilitate the legibility of the pieces and, if necessary, a future intervention can be carried out. The general objective of the treatment was to put the busts in a stable condition, allowing for a safe exposure and packaging, in addition to the creation of documentation that contributes to the preservation and history of the pieces.
