Resumo: Title: Effects of a 12-month multicomponent exercise program on blood pressure in postmenopausal women Introduction: The main purpose of this study is to identify the effects of a long-term multicomponent exercise program on resting systolic blood pressure and resting diastolic blood pressure in postmenopausal women. Methods: A total of 65 women (age= 55,9 ± 5,7 years; height= 155,3 ± 5,9 cm; weight= 66,8 ± 11,5 kg; SBP= 125 ± 18 mmHg and DBP= 73 ± 9 mmHg) that were integrated in the “Shape up during menopause” program were divided in 3 groups. These 3 groups were separated by central adiposity levels: Control Group, Exerp+ (higher central adiposity) and Exper- (lower central adiposity). The exercise group was submitted to a 12-month multicomponent exercise program that included aerobic training (aerobic step classes), strength training and flexibility. It were performed three non-consecutive sessions per week with approximately 60 minutes of duration. SBP, DBP, MAP, body composition and anthropometric measures were obtained at baseline and post intervention. Results: The results have shown no major differences on SBP along the exercise program (F= 0.067 and p= 0.796), it means that the 12-month exercise program did not affect the SBP in the studied groups. However, statistically differences were found in DBP and also MAP values after the 12-months exercise program (F= 13.44 and p= 0.001; F= 9.86 and p= 0.003, respectively). Conclusion: This 12-month multicomponent exercise program only promoted significant changes in resting values of DBP and MAP, but the same did not occur in SBP. The BP values were not influenced by group division.
