An analytical perspective from senate candidates´ political discourse on Twitter: The case of the US 2020 federal elections TwitterCandidatesSenatePolitical DiscourseSentiment AnalysisPopulismDissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Driven Marketing, specialization in Digital Marketing and AnalyticsTwitter is already part of the US Senators’ election campaign, given that it is a platform that favors rapid dissemination of information, the construction of personality, and foments proximity through affection. Senators use Twitter to spread their political brand, foster a new digital dialogue with voters, and provide a bird’s eye view of their diverse policy agendas. Representation through social media challenges what we know about the institutionally and politically limited behavior of senators, now looking at it from a new perspective where individual discretion is high, and costs are low. Through this data-driven study based on six months, the intent is to investigate the rhetoric used by Senate candidates in the 2020 United States federal campaign. Our main goal is to gain greater insight into the online rhetoric that converts the electorate to the point of choosing the opposing party, the impact of populist discourse, and whether it affects online polarization. Some of our findings included rhetorical asymmetries according to partisan patterns. Republicans have more positive and less negative discourse on a sentimental level, encouraging polarized online behavior. Also of significance, the type of publication and the frequency with which they publish, led by the Democratic candidates, is directly correlated with the online adherence of followers. Moreover, we found that senatorial candidates are adopting a nationalized online reputation and that adopting a populist discourse may lead to greater online engagement, an example of which is the winner of the State of Georgia.Rita, Paulo Miguel Rasquinho FerreiraAntónio, Nuno Miguel da ConceiçãoRUNMachado, Ivânia Pedro Correia2023-04-142026-04-14T00:00:00Z2023-04-14T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/152358TID:203275071enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T05:34:42Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/152358Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:54:53.058455Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
