Resumo: The "Schengen Area" was born due to reasons that also contributed, in a large extent, to the consecration of the enhanced cooperation of the European Union, namely discrepancies among Member States. The Treaty of Lisbon proceeded to the "communitarisation" of the "area of freedom, security and justice" (last configuration of the correspondent to the "Schengen Area"). But the difficulties which have plagued some Member States of the "Schengen Area", unable to duly fulfill their obligations as participants, leads to a theoretical question: should the enhanced cooperation mechanism be considered for trying to solve such problems?
