Resumo: | Since the beginning of the millennium, there has been a growing number of architecture festivals, which have progressively abandoned the classic exhibition venues, with limited access, to place themselves in the urban space, using the city as a design laboratory through ephemeral interventions. Faced with society's tendency towards the individualization of the subject and its consequences in the reduced physical use of public space, these festivals have assumed more positive perspectives by promoting alternative imaginaries and contributing to the discussion of more inclusive, empowered and collective ways of using the city. This dissertation explores urban architecture festivals as potential spaces for thinking about the future. Starting from the experience of participation and personal experience of the Concéntrico Festival to a broader reflection, it questions the impacts of this type of festival on the inhabitants, the city and its future. Given their ephemerality and periodicity, we seek to understand how they can potentially transform current realities; and how their format can remain critical and relevant in the long term. The research materializes in a document organized into three parts. The first, Festival as potential space, highlights the liminarity of festivals as a potential quality for developing collective and alternative experiences to everyday urban life, as well as redefining the meanings attributed to public space. To test this hypothesis, a series of cases of urban architecture festivals are analyzed based on their curatorship and type of interventions, touching on themes such as tactical urbanism and follies, as well as investigating different levels of civic involvement in their curatorship. The second part, Festival Concéntrico, analyzes the Logroño festival in detail, framing it in the production of contemporary festivals, examining its various editions and providing a critical reception based on personal experience of the festival's 8th edition. Finally, the third part, Festival and Future, intersects the cases analyzed throughout the dissertation, making the reader aware of the various ways of curating an urban architecture festival. This study considers the impact of these initiatives on urban experiences, highlighting promising perspectives for continuous experimentation and discussion about the future of our cities; so that they can become progressively "more socially successful and favorable to happiness" (Lefebre, 2012). |
