Projects and the development of competencies in oral communication in the early years

Resumo: The development of competencies in oral communication is a topic that puzzles both early childhood educators and primary school teachers, since we cannot consider a child as proficient in this domain because he/she can talk. It demands the use of certain strategies, and will benefit from projects making the teaching/learning of the mother tongue interact with other content areas. In this text, we propose an analysis of some projects developed in Portuguese kindergartens and primary schools within teacher training articulated with a seminar dealing with research on Education we supervised in what concerns the teaching/learning of oral communication. In this study, we used a qualitative methodology based on content analysis of data concerning the activities developed with the children during the didactic intervention in the center of each project. Our main objectives were to identify and describe the perspective of didactic approach of oral communication underlying those projects. The results of this study revealed that using certain didactic strategies to approach oral communication is both recommendable and possible and allowed us to reflect on the way we are training our students in what concerns teaching the mother tongue to develop such competencies in the children.

Ceci demande le recours à certaines stratégies et peut bénéficier de projets qui amènent l’enseignement/ apprentissage de la langue maternelle à interagir avec d’autres domaines. Dans ce texte, nous présentons une analyse de quelques projets développés dans des jardins d’enfants et écoles primaires au Portugal dans le cadre de la formation pédagogique articulée avec un séminaire de recherche en Éducation que nous avons dirigé en ce qui concerne l’enseignement/apprentissage de la communication orale. Dans cette étude, nous avons eu recours à une méthodologie qualitative basée sur l’analyse de contenu de données concernant les activités intégrées dans l’intervention didactique qui est au centre de chaque projet. Nos buts principaux étaient d’identifier et de décrire la perspective sous-jacente à l’approche didactique de la communication orale dans chacun de ces projets. Les résultats de l’étude ont révélé que le recours à certaines stratégies didactiques pour travailler la communication orale est non seulement recommandable, mais aussi possible et nous ont amenée à réfléchir sur la façon dont nous étions en train de former nos étudiants en ce qui concernait l’enseignement/apprentissage de la langue maternelle pour développer ces compétences chez les enfants.O desenvolvimento de competências em comunicação oral é uma preocupação tanto para os educadores de infância como para os professores do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, dado que não podemos considerar uma criança como proficiente neste domínio só porque sabe falar. Requer o recurso a certas estratégias e será beneficiado pela implementação de projetos que levem o ensino/aprendizagem da língua materna a interagir com outras áreas curriculares. Neste texto, propomos uma análise de alguns projetos que orientámos, desenvolvidos no jardim-de-infância e em escolas do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico em Portugal no âmbito da prática pedagógica supervisionada articulada com o seminário de investigação em Educação, tendo em conta a abordagem didática da oralidade. Neste estudo, adotámos uma metodologia de índole qualitativa baseada na análise de conteúdo de dados relativos às atividades desenvolvidas com as crianças na intervenção didática que estava no centro de cada projeto. Os nossos principais objetivos eram identificar e caracterizar a perspetiva de abordagem didática da comunicação oral subjacente a esses projetos.
