In this article, we will analyze the vineyard and wine in Alto Douro and Pico Island in the 19th and 20th centuries, in a comparative perspective. Using either specialized bibliography or archive documentation (in particular for the Alto Douro wine region), we will highlight the differences and similarities between the two World Heritage wine regions, focusing on the following aspects: socio-economic structures of the wine sector, responses to vine diseases in the second half of the 19th century, forms of the land frame and grape varieties used in wine production. As a practical example of study, in the particular case of Alto Douro, we will present the Bomfim, Zimbro, and Senhora da Ribeira Estates.
