Resumo: The potential contribution of four Natural Science 5th grade textbooks in the development of students’ self-direction, through paper and pencil learning activities within the domain ‘Water, rocks and soil - Earth materials’, is the focus of this study. The promotion of students’ self-direction is mainly restricted to strategy management, in information searching tasks, and taking the initiative in learning self-assessment tasks. It is important to increment oriented spaces for the student involvement in the management of other learning components (objectives, learning processes, etc.).

It is important to increment oriented spaces for the student involvement in the management of other learning components (objectives, learning processes, etc.).La potencial contribución de cuatro libros escolares de Ciencias Naturales del 5° año en el desarrollo de la autodirección de los estudiantes, a través de las actividades de aprendizaje de lápiz y papel en el dominio ‘El agua, rocas y el suelo - materiales de la Tierra’, es el foco de este estudio. La promoción de la auto-dirección está restringida principalmente a la gestión de la estrategia, a las tareas de búsqueda de información, y a la iniciativa en la realización de tareas de autoevaluación de aprendizaje. Es importante incrementar espacios orientados a la participación de los estudiantes en el manejo de otros componentes de aprendizaje (objetivos, procesos de aprendizaje, etc.).O potencial contributo de quatro manuais escolares de Ciências Naturais do 5º ano no desenvolvimento da autodireção dos alunos, através das atividades de aprendizagem de lápis e papel do domínio ‘A água, as rochas e o solo - materiais terrestres’, constitui o enfoque deste estudo. A promoção da autodireção dos alunos está, principalmente, restrita à gestão da estratégia, em tarefas de pesquisa de informação, e à tomada de iniciativa na realização de tarefas de autoavaliação da aprendizagem.
