Global citizenship education and intercomprehension: reflections about a project developed in primary education

Resumo: This article presents the results of an education project for global citizenship developed around the idea of intercomprehension and it was carried out with children of a 2nd grade class attending a primary school in the region of Aveiro (Portugal). This is an action research study whose main purpose was to understand the place of intercomprehension in education for global citizenship of children attending the first years of schooling. To do this, seven sessions were developed over a period of three weeks allowing the collection of a broad set of data, later submitted to content analysis. With the data collected, we first analyzed the initial representations that the participating children had of Self, the Other, and the World, and then analyzed how they were changed over the course of the project. The results of the study show a transformation in children’s representations of Self, the Other and the World, which indicate the construction of a new vision of their role as global citizens. The study also reveals the significance of intercomprehension both as an educational goal and as a competence in processes of global citizenship education of school-aged children.

Ce projet a été réalisé avec des enfants dans une classe de 2ème année de scolarité, dans une école de premier cycle d’Enseignement Basique dans la région d’Aveiro (Portugal). Il s’agit d’une étude de type recherche-action qui a eu comme grande finalité comprendre le rôle de l’intercompréhension dans l’éducation à la citoyenneté mondiale d’élèves dans les premières années de scolarité. Dans ce sens, le projet s’est développé dans une classe en sept séances tout au long de trois semaines ce qui a permis de recueillir un ensemble de données qui ont été soumises à une analyse de contenu. Avec les données recueillies, les auteurs ont analysé, dans une première phase, les représentations initiales des enfants sur le Moi, l’Autre et le Monde, et, dans une deuxième phase, la façon dont ces représentations se sont modifiées tout au long du projet. Les résultats montrent une transformation des représentations des enfants sur le Moi, l’Autre et le Monde, tout en renvoyant à la construction d’une nouvelle vision de leur rôle comme des citoyens du monde où l’intercompréhension se montre comme finalité des processus d’éducation à la citoyenneté mondiale.O presente artigo apresenta os resultados de um projeto de educação para a cidadania global desenvolvido em torno da ideia de intercompreensão, projeto esse realizado com crianças de uma turma do 2.ª ano, numa escola do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico da região de Aveiro (Portugal).Trata-se de um estudo de tipo investigação-ação que teve como grande finalidade procurar compreender qual o lugar da intercompreensão na educação para a cidadania global de crianças a frequentar os primeiros anos de escolaridade. Para tal, foram desenvolvidas sete sessões ao longo de três semanas que permitiram recolher um conjunto alargado de dados, posteriormente submetidos a análise de conteúdo. Com os dados recolhidos, primeiramente analisaram-se as representações iniciais que as crianças participantes possuíam sobre o Eu, o Outro e o Mundo, para, de seguida, se analisar a forma como estas se alteraram com o decorrer do projeto.
