This dissertation is a quest for answers in the past to current problems. Furthermore, it is also an attempt to understand how effective this method can or cannot be. It is an endeavor to organize the chaos regarding the author's understanding of what he believes to be the discipline of architecture. It is a confrontation between the imaginary and reality, which becomes objectified by inserting the former into the latter. This is accomplished through the representation of memory in a very specific regulatory instrument, which is the archive. With this method, the work delves into a relatively recent past, advocating modernism as a movement in architecture that took advantage of the instruments of representing reality in various interdisciplinary areas for the benefit of the development and progress of the discipline itself. While the object of study in the temporal field is the modern, in the physical realm, the city of Porto takes the spotlight as a practical example of proximity. One final definition of this work is the exhibition and comparison of organized ideas and topics on an inevitably chaotic mental map. This turns the work into a collection of numerous fragments of the same matter.
