Resumo: The present dissertation seeks to understand the role of architecture as a tool to help solving problems associated with territories of social nature. Serving, thus, as a case study, Bairro do Aleixo: a place of memories and collective participation, once inhabited and dwelled, which currently assists its gradual disoccupation. This neighborhood finds itself in a moment of impasse - what was initially a complex of social housing composed by five towers, is now constituted by three - however, its end has been for a long time delineated. Analyzing the metamorphosis that the towers have gone through, and their collective adjacent spaces, it is possible to understand the contexts that led to the neighborhood's current state, known for its marginal components that connotes it as a ghetto. Taking the drug traffic as a premise, the authorities managed to create a narrative that supports the eviction of the poorest and, consequently, the real estate value of the site. Attempting to counter the cruel processes of demolition not only of buildings, but also of homes, places of affective bonds, of memories and relationships developed over decades of survival, it s proposed a strategy that intends to rescue the neighborhood from this social segregation at which it is submitted and, consequently, returning it to the city using participative methods that contribute to its revitalization. This work seeks to understand and present tools that architecture can provide to serve the almost forgotten need to structure community, planning regenerating solutions for a spatial organization that is more inclusive. To the human spatial necessities, architects have the ability to provide other spatialities that individuals don't realize they need, and that carry in them the foundation for a felt life of daily experiences, elevated to forms of safety, comfort, adaptation and creativity. Starting from a historical analysis, the problems of social, urban and architectonic matter brought up by the case study will be explored. From there, a set of proposals will be presented, that intend to create a positive impact in all the city, offering it a reconfigured neighborhood, that could be safe and permeable, and serve many social layers and age groups, providing structures that include broader programs and equipment for all their citizens. It is believed that it is not only dependent on architecture to find a solution for such complex social issues as in the case of Aleixo, although defending that it can contribute for its attenuation. This work is, therefore, an exercise of architecture project that pretends to work towards the improvement of a social neighborhood in the margin of the city of Porto, offering it a collective purpose in an attempt to reintegrated it in the dynamics of the city.
