In this paper we propose a hands-on activity about fish adaptations which engage primary students (seven to eleven years old) in a visit to a fish market (or the supermarket) and two experimental tasks to be performed in the classroom. This activity is focused on adaptations of fish to marine environment and in particular to their habitat and way of life. The main activity allows students to discover the biodiversity of marine fishes through the relationship between the external structures and their function. It also promotes investigative skills like direct observation, respect for the evidence, collection of data, and the use of drawing to record real data.
