The current report reflects the internship carried out for six months at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the Middle East and Maghreb Department. In this sense, the first part of this paper is related to the organization and functioning of the Ministry, as well as, briefly, the activities developed there, and the skills acquired. The second part of this report focuses on the Western Sahara conflict as a destabilizing factor for the Maghreb region from the perspective of foreign policy and the right to self-determination. The Western Sahara conflict is complex for several reasons. First, it involves two parties with different territorial claims: Morocco, which controls most of the territory, and the Polisario Front, which claims independence for the region. Second, the conflict is linked to important economic and strategic issues, particularly regarding the exploitation of natural resources and maritime trade routes. In addition, the conflict is exacerbated by regional and international tensions, as well as complex geopolitical considerations involving Algeria, Spain, France, and the United States. Finally, the issue of peoples' self-determination is at the heart of the conflict, which raises important legal and ethical questions. All these factors contribute to the complexity of the Western Sahara conflict and make it difficult to find a lasting political solution that can accommodate the interests of all parties involved. In this sense, the main objective of this report, in addition to analyzing the position of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the question of Western Sahara, in combination with the position of other countries, the main objective of this Report will be to provide a markedly legal and in-depth study of the concept of the right to self-determination.
