Resumo: The Scientific and Technological Impact in Human Life is a topic in which, the majority of Portuguese 8th grade Natural Science school textbooks contains proposed learning activities. This didactical element is the focus of the present study because it creates the opportunity for students to develop their knowledge, competencies and attitudes, enabling them to become an active citizen in society. In this regard, and since the nature of this topic encourages STS approaches, it is important to understand the educational role of the learning activities, using the STS perspective as a reference. Achieving this goal required the mobilization of qualitative and quantitative procedures oriented towards: 1) listing and analysing the tasks in the proposed learning activities, to characterize the potential roles undertaken by the students; 2) identifying explored themes in order to determine the scientific approach and the local, regional or global range that characterize them, and 3) identifying the STS emphasis in the exploration of those themes. The learning activities exhibit features of STS orientation with different degrees of incidence: socio-scientific nature and global range arecharacteristic of the addressed themes; the impact of technology on society is the main focus on the exploration of the themes; and, the promotion of social intervention ability is limited to a small number of tasks. The analysis shows the importance of promoting learning environments oriented towards developing decision-making skills, participation and the assumption of responsible actions.

Es en este elemento didáctico en el que se centra el presente estudio, por crear condiciones para que el estudiante pueda desarrollar conocimientos, habilidades y actitudes que le permitan convertirse en un ciudadano intervencionista en la sociedad. Dada la naturaleza de este tema, en el que parece propicio un abordaje CTS, es necesario comprender el papel educativo de las actividades de aprendizaje cuando se exploran teniendo como referencia una perspectiva CTS. La consecución de este objetivo implicó la movilización de procesos cualitativos y cuantitativos orientados para: 1) Listar y realizar un estudio de las actividades de aprendizaje con el propósito de caracterizar los posibles papeles que los estudiantes pueden desenvolver; 2) Listar los temas explorados para poder identificar el abordaje científico y el alcance local, regional o global que los caracteriza y 3) Estudio del enfoque CTS en la exploración de los temas. Las actividades de aprendizaje exhiben rasgos de orientación CTS con diferentes grados de incidencia: el caráctersocio-científico y el alcance global son características de los temas abordados; el impacto de la Tecnología en la Sociedad es el principal foco en la exploración de los temas y la promoción de la capacidad de intervención social está presente en muy pocas actividades. El análisis efectuado demuestra la importancia de la promoción de entornos de aprendizaje orientados al desarrollo de competencias relacionadas con la toma de decisiones, la participación y la implicación en acciones responsables.Impacte do Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico na Vida Humana é um tópico que, na maioria dos manuais escolares portugueses de Ciências Naturais do 8º ano, integra propostas de atividades de aprendizagem. É neste elemento didático que se focaliza o presente estudo, pela possibilidade de criar condições para o aluno desenvolver conhecimentos, capacidades e atitudes que lhe permitem tornar-se um cidadão interventivo na sociedade. Neste sentido e dada a natureza do tópico programático propícia a abordagens CTS, importa compreender o papel educativo das atividades de aprendizagem na sua exploração por referência à perspetiva CTS. A consecução deste objetivo implicou a mobilização de procedimentos qualitativos e quantitativos orientados para: 1) levantamento das tarefas propostas nas atividades de aprendizagem, com o intuito de caracterizar os papéis passíveis de serem assumidos pelos alunos; 2) levantamento das temáticas exploradas, com o intuito de identificar o enfoque científico e o âmbito local, regional ou global que as caracterizam e 3) levantamento do enfoque CTS na exploração das temáticas. As atividades de aprendizagem exibem traços de orientação CTS com diferentes graus de incidência: o caráter sociocientífico e o âmbito global são características das temáticas abordadas; o impacte da Tecnologiana Sociedade é o principal enfoque de exploração das temáticas e a promoção da capacidade de intervenção social está limitada a um número reduzido de tarefas.
