The fair represents, by tradition, the privileged space of commercial exchanges and, therefore, also the opportunity to gather and socialize, often related to the existence of religious building. However, as an active phenomenon in the dynamization and development of the territory, its existence is not restricted to these possibilities. It is, mainly, its capacity of potential participation in the structuring of a territory that is explored in this dissertation. It is a question of understanding the fair as a territorial phenomenon, from the principles that guide its implantation in a given territory, to the way they interact and dynamize the surrounding territorial structures. From these principles of fixation which are considered to be decisive, it's mainly approached the evolution of the communication systems - road and rail - seeking to establish relations between its routes and the location of the fair spaces. To the growth and progressive development of Maia has corresponded a transformation in its territory, from traditionally agricultural to dynamic urban center. This territorial complexity has allowed us to study diverse fairs, which reflect the variety inherent to the transformation progress seen in this territory, making it a particularly stimulating study object. For each space, it's made an expositive reading that intends to, in the first place, contextualize the studied territory fragment, understanding its main characteristics and transformation over time. It analyzes the fair from its implantation to its organization and correlational actions. It is also recognized the particularity of the fair phenomenon in what concerns its cyclicity - it is provisionally installed on a certain space. Its impact as a urban dynamic is managed in that cyclic oscillation between presence and absence, between in activity space and waiting space.
