Resumo: Objective: to present the characteristics of self-mutilation in students from a public school in the interior of the state of Ceará, Brazil. Methodology: cross-sectional study with 995 high school students from an integral public school. Data collection was carried out in person. The Self-Mutilation Behavior Scale and Student's t test and Analysis of Variance were used to compare the variables of interest. Results: in relation to the frequency of self-mutilation behaviors, biting oneself, picking at a wound and hitting oneself on purpose stood out. There were significant associations between positive social reinforcement and marital status, with greater susceptibility among singles (p=0.018), automatic and social reinforcers and sex, with greater susceptibility in males (p=0.000) and between automatic reinforcers (negative, p=0.036 and positive, p=0.027) and negative social (p=0.017) and non-practice of religion. Conclusion: the behaviors of self-harm and the reasons identified in the study indicate the need to implement intersectoral actions in schools to prevent such behaviors among the population of high school students.
