Resumo: Introduction: sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by a progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength with risk of functional impairment, increased probability of falls and loss of autonomy. Method: An integrative review of the scientific literature was carried out, using articles published in the PubMed®, BVS® and Scielo® databases in Portuguese and English. The descriptors "sarcopenia", "elderly" and "protein" were used for search, being crossed for search with the Boolean operator AND.Results: With a prevalence ranging from 3 to 24% in the elderly, it is a process resulting from pathophysiological mechanisms that include aging, neuromuscular impairment, physical exercise, endocrine factors, oxidative stress and nutrition. With regard to food, inadequate consumption of total calories and protein appears to be the main contributing factors. Conclusion: adequate intake of calories and protein (0.8/kg/day) and supplementation of whey protein (20 to 40g/day), creatine (0.3g/kg/day), vitamin D and calcium (1200 to 1500 mg per day) can prevent and treat the progression of sarcopenia in the elderly.
