ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of using blogs and podcasts in the teaching of English to a 5th form class on an alternative curricular pathway. Even though blogs and podcasts might no longer be the most current online resources, their interactive features have demonstrated effectiveness and suitability for teaching, especially for language teaching. Despite the fact that several initiatives involving the integration and use of ICT in teaching English as a Foreign Language are known, it is still difficult to assess the educational use and the impact of these technologies on teachers’ classroom practices and students’ performance, specifically in classes with these features. This study has given us the opportunity to add supplementary information to the existing literature on this topic in an attempt to suggest answers to situations that concern teachers who are faced with classes on alternative curricular pathways, i.e., classes which involve a range of diverse and differentiated teaching techniques. The main purpose of this study was to enhance the pedagogical use of these tools, especially in the development of activities and exchange in a network with students. Thus we aimed to contribute to the adoption and diversification of resources available in Web 2.0 and intervene in students’ performance. In order to achieve this, we chose an Elementary School (2nd and 3rd cycles), belonging to a group of schools in the centre of Portugal, and prepared a case study that might provide results which, while not able to be generalized, are still an advantage in the replication of best teaching practices at this level of education and with this type of educational provision. The data, collected by means of surveys, questionnaires, observation grids and submitted to content analysis, allowed for the association of ideas that led to conclusions about the impact of the use of these tools with this group of students. At various stages of the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of this work, we have found that the use of blog and podcast technology contributed to the increase of the technological literacy of this group of students, while promoting interest/participation in the English classes and granting the development of their communication skills. |
