Existência, Morte e Educação: Uma Reflexão em Três Andamentos

Este artigo sublinha três aspetos. Em primeiro lugar, a ligação entre existência, finitude e morte, salientando-se que é a experiência da nossa contingência, ou seja, da nossa vulnerabilidade e fragilidade originárias, iniludível atendendo à nossa mortalidade, que nos leva a procurar um sentido para a vida. Em segundo lugar, chama-se a atenção para o facto de que o Ocidente tem levado a cabo uma denominada 'pedagogia da infinitude', silenciando os temas do envelhecimento e da morte, numa ânsia técnico-instrumental por eliminar as incertezas que a finitude humana implica. No entanto, há estudos que evidenciam a importância que as próprias crianças atribuem à discussão de temáticas sobre a morte e à escuta da sua voz, quando elas próprias se encontram envolvidas em situações de falecimento de pessoas queridas. O mesmo interesse e importância pode ser encontrado em atividades de educação de adultos. Finalmente, um terceiro ponto é dedicado a pensar as escolhas a que devemos ter direito em fim de vida (cuidados paliativos integrais, testamento vital e morte assistida). Existence, Death and Education: A Reflection in Three MovementsThis article underlines three aspects. In the first place, the connection between existence, finitude and death. This part emphasizes that it is the experience of our contingency, i.e., the sense of our fundamental vulnerability and fragility, unavoidable on account of our mortality, that moves us in the search of a meaning for life. In a second place, attention is given to the fact that the Western world has been practicing a so-called 'pedagogy of infinitude' which silences the issues of ageing and death, using the techno-instrumental reason for eliminating the uncertainties that the human finitude implies. However, there are studies that stress the importance that children give to the discussion of death issues and to the involvement of themselves in situations that have to do with the death of a loved one, wanting their voice to be heard. The same interest and importance can be found in adult education activities. Finally, a third aspect is dedicated to thinking about the choices we must be entitled to at the end of life (integral palliative care, living wills and assisted death).Keywords:Finitude, death education, assisted death, living wills, integral palliative care.
