Studies on STS and secondary school: research results on the brazilian military school system

Currently schools still use content-based and segregated curriculum. School subjects are completely sealed and unsurpassable, even within the same knowledge field. But science and technology are still part of the students’ school path. Are students fully able to understand the meaning of what is learnt at school and apply that knowledge beyond school frontiers, perceiving the use of science and technology in their daily lives? Can teachers contribute to the development of the students’ knowledge of science and technology? Is there such a development during the students’ school life? In order to comprehend students’ and teachers’ thoughts on the perceptions they have on the quotidian use of science and technology, this research was conducted in a complex educational system, with schools spread throughout the Brazilian territory, achieving a total of 5352 participants and a valid sample of 4250 respondents, between high school freshmen and senior year students and teachers. The results of this research are impressive and foster further achievements.
