Related diversification is—on average—more frequent, but unrelated diversification is nevertheless considered important to avoid economic lock-in. Here, we study the frequency and timing of unrelated diversification using two international trade datasets at the country level. We find that related diversification is more frequent for countries at low levels of development but becomes less frequent as countries climb the complexity ladder. These findings contribute to our understanding of the role of relatedness in the diversification of economies at different levels of complexity.Information Management Research Center (MagIC) - NOVA Information Management SchoolNOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS)RUNPinheiro, Flávio L.Hartmann, DominikBoschma, RonHidalgo, César A.2022-10-012024-07-21T00:00:00Z2022-10-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/article24application/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/122159eng0048-7333PURE: 33047088https://doi.org/10.1016/j.respol.2021.104323info:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T05:04:05Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/122159Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:44:46.450027Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
