Resumo: The mail goal of the present study is to understand the relation between academic competence and social competence in students from elementary school. The participants were 75 3rd grade students, aged between 8 and 10 years old, from public and private schools in the northern Portugal. The sample included students with learning disabilities and students with high academic competence, identified by their teachers. The results highlight a strong relation between academic competence and social competence: students with learning disabilities have a significant lower level of social skills and higher level of behavior problems than students with high academic competence. The results also showed that students with learning disabilities are strongly rejected by their peers. This study emphasizes that children with learning disabilities have difficulties, not only in academic skills, but also in the field of social skills. This kind of findings should be considered for understanding and intervention.

This kind of findings should be considered for understanding and intervention.O presente estudo tem como principal objectivo compreender a relação entre competência académica e competência social em alunos do 1º ciclo. A amostra é constituída por 75 crianças, alunos do 3º ano do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, com idades entre os 8 e os 10 anos, recolhida em escolas públicas e privadas do Norte de Portugal. Desta amostra fazem parte crianças com dificuldades de aprendizagem e crianças com elevada competência académica, sinalizadas pelos próprios professores. Os resultados deste estudo evidenciam que existe uma forte relação entre competência académica e competência social ou seja, os alunos com dificuldades de aprendizagem apresentam um nível significativamente mais baixo de habilidades sociais e mais elevado de problemas de comportamento do que os alunos com competência académica elevada. Verificou-se também que os alunos com dificuldades de aprendizagem são fortemente rejeitados pelos seus pares.
