Summary: This paper is part of the doctoral studies at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro – Portugal, discusses the Brazilian legislation regarding the formation, at a higher level, of a teacher in music. The methodology is qualitative with analyze documental, we propose historical description of the teacher formation in music is carried out based on the analysis of the Law on Guidelines and Bases of Brazilian Education (Law 9.394/1996), National Curricular Guidelines for the Undergraduate Music Course (Resolution 02/2004-CES/CNE), National Curricular Guidelines for Initial Higher Education (Resolution 02/2015-CNE), the National Guidelines for the Operationalization of Music Education in Basic Education (Resolution 02/2016-CNE), of the then proposal of the Common National Curriculum Base for Basic Education (2nd version / 2016), texts and manifestos of associations of the area regarding the current changes of public educational policies occurred in Brazil and their implications in the courses of degree in music.
