Novel and Progymnasmata: the exercise of narration in Leucippe and Clitophon

Resumo: The exercise of narration (διήγημα) lies at the base of the Greek novel, as a literary genre in prose. The Progymnasmata draw a distinction among mythical, fictive, civil and historical narrations. In this novel we find examples of the three former narration types, being the fictive one the most recurrent category, since it is inherent to the genre. Some examples of the three types are discussed and it is highlighted how the novelist makes an agile and masterful use of the recommendations prescribed by the Progymnasmata.

Los Progymnasmata distinguen entre relato mítico, fictivo, civil e histórico. En la novela analizada encontramos ejemplos de los tres primeros tipos, siendo el fictivo el más frecuente, por ser inherente al género novelesco. Se analizan ejemplos de los tres tipos y se resalta cómo el novelista utiliza con flexibilidad y maestría las recomendaciones que ofrecen los Progymasmata.L’exercice du récit (διήγημα) est à la base du roman grec, comme genre littéraire en prose. Les Progymnasmata font la distinction entre récit mythique, fictionnel, civil et historique. Dans le roman analysé, nous trouvons des exemples des trois premiers types, le fictionnel étant le plus fréquent, parce qu’il est inhérent au genre romanesque. Après avoir analysé des exemples des trois types, nous vérifions que le romancier utilise les recommandations des Progymnasmata avec flexibilité et maîtrise. O exercício da narração (διήγημα) está na base do romance grego, como género literário em prosa. Os Progymnasmata distinguem entre narração mítica, ficcional, civil e histórica. No romance analisado encontramos exemplos dos três primeiros tipos, sendo o ficcional o mais frequente, por ser inerente ao género.
