Resumo: This paper aims to present a brief critical review of the concept of Distance Education (DE) as it was defined until the outbreak of the COVID-19 and to confront it with the concept of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) coined by Hodges et al. (2020). Clearly, issues of conceptual delimitation within the domain of learning paradigms and models are not a recent problem. However, the societal need to name concepts and the rapid and improvised redesign of teaching and learning models has led to the rapid spread of terminology that is not always accurate. Thus, the aim of our reflection is to contribute to a diachronic view, demonstrating that the concepts of DE and ERT have common characteristics but are not equivalent.

(2020). Constata-se que as questões de delimitação conceptual no domínio dos paradigmas e modelos de aprendizagem não são um problema recente. Todavia, a necessidade societal de nomeação e de redesenho rápido de modelos improvisados de ensino e aprendizagem levou à divulgação generalizada de terminologia nem sempre precisa.
