Resumo: In this article we aim at demonstrating how religion can determine the approach of different matters and serve as an ersatz of embarrassing wounded pride feelings or personal revenge. Thus, we choose two authors, writing in Latin and both belonging to 16th century Catholic Europe: the Italian botanist and doctor Pietro Andrea Mattioli, and the Portuguese young Jesuit João de Madureira. We provide a few examples of the anti-Semitic attitude of the first, extracted from his Apologia aduersus Amathum Lusitanum (1558); and, in the case of Madureira, our textual evidence is extracted from a long poem about the S. Bartholomew’ s Day massacre (1572).

No caso do médico e botânico italiano Pietro Andrea Mattioli selecionaram-se passagens da Apologia aduersus Amathum Lusitanum (1558), de evidente ressaibo anti-semita. Quanto ao jesuíta João de Madureira, a escolha incidiu sobre excertos de um poema anti-protestante, escrito a pretexto e imediatamente após a Matança de S.
