The problem with the abandonment of commercial ground floors is a serious problem that occurs in many cities and assumes major proportions in Oporto. This dissertation sought to find, register, quantify and map the problem, search for explanations, evaluate the consequences and study solutions. The source of the problem is related to an excessive and inadequate offer, frequently in irrelevant urban neighbourhoods that, with the changes in the forms of consumption have become obsolete and consigned to neglect. This circumstance generates an economic, social, environmental and urban quality loss that is imperative to solve. It is shocking how the indifference of society, public authorities, landlords and the way of thinking of most of architects, have ignored this issue, when being a relevant phenomenon for the city it should be a concern but, apparently, the issue does not exist. The main objective of this dissertation is to prove that it is possible to solve, or at least minimize, the problem through transformations of programs and architecture of old abandoned commercial buildings, so as to demonstrate that there are alternatives to the present situation.
