Santiago estate, is located in a site classified as a cultural landscape, the Alto Douro Vinhateiro. Its intended, thru project, to achieve a broader reflection on the topic of intervention in patrimony and landscape, from conceptual aspects to constructive options and tectonic. Not intending to deal with the landscape as if it were a scenario, a visual and literary narrative is set in motion, evoking its transformation processes and a carefully planned study on the functional and compositional principles of Douro estates explains how this territorial and agricultural units influence the landscape context. It becomes necessary, using specific bibliography, to conduct a study regarding the intervention on landscape and patrimony, from its conceptual dimension till its practical application in the rehabilitation project of Santiago estate. The methodology which serves as basis of the investigation relies on the cross checking of bibliographic and documental sources and on extensive field work, given the absence of information on the preexistence. Defending the need for a profound study on the object prior to intervention, a series of analysis and interpretation of the existent are putted in place, using drawing as tool of investigation. The present paper intends to develop a project for the rehabilitation of Santiago estate, adapted to its contemporary needs, establishing the link between the old and the new and, simultaneously, preserving the memory and identity of this piece of patrimony in the landscape.
