Resumo: For a clinical decision making based on assumptions and principles governing Nursing, as a science and profession, it is necessary a family assessment and intervention based on a theoretical framework of Family Health Nursing. Thus, it was intended to describe the experience of using the Dynamic Model of Family Assessment and Intervention (MDAIF) in providing care to a family in the transition to parenting. Four nursing consultations were developed, enabling data collection, diagnostic formulation, intervention and identification of health gains for the family under study. The data obtained were documented in the information system in use at the Primary Health Care functional unit. Data analysis was performed taking into account the information produced, family specificities, as well as the criteria and principles defined in the operative matrix of the theoretical framework used. After analyzing the data collected according to the MDAIF areas of attention of the family system, it is concluded that it is a nuclear family, is classified in upper middle class. Presents knowledge about parenting role not shown. The following nursing diagnoses were identified that require intervention: Parental role compromised in the face of knowledge about vaccination, the child's psychomotor development and the child's crying. Interventions took care needs into account based on family strengths, resources and skills. The MDAIF proved to be a very useful instrument for family assessment and intervention, enabling the enhancement of family resources and achieving gains in family health.
