The Internet is currently one of the most used means of accessing news and information. The storage of the data provided by the different online channels is increasingly facilitated, which allows the creation of large databases. However, analyzing these data can be complicated and a time-consuming job. In this case, turning that data into visualizations would make this process easier. The main objetive of this study is to make an analysis that supports the design of an online media observatory - MediaViz. With this analysis it will be possible to design a platform that presents the data visually clear to its users. In order to reach such objectives a non-experimental study was developed. Firstly, an analysis grid was developed and it was applied to the different existing platforms. This grid was then used as a basis for developing a questionnaire that was sent to people representing the target audience (media students, researchers and journalists). The data collected are related to the demography and the application of the developed grid. The results reveal that the most important levels of analysis are the sources and the documents. Regarding the dimension of analysis, the participants of the questionnaire gave greater importance to topics and non-geographic entities. This study presents data relevant to the design of a data visualization platform that allows its user to reach its objectives and to use the platform regularly. This data will be used for the future development of the MediaViz platform but may also be used in the development of other platforms.
