However, research has shown that its effects can extend beyond these areas, with the potential to improve mood and reduce anxiety. Additionally, physical activity has consistently been associated with improved physical health, life satisfaction, cognitive function, and psychological well-being. On the other hand, physical inactivity has been linked to the development of psychological disorders. Therefore, the inclusion of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of mental health disorders is a promising area of research. This review aims to describe the effects of physical activity and exercise in the prevention and treatment of the most prevalent mental illnesses. Additionally, it aims to identify the differences observed with the existing varieties of training, as well as to understand and explain the underlying mechanisms. Thus, it was considered important to address the following diseases: Depression; Anxiety; Post-traumatic stress disorder; Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; Alzheimer's disease; Parkinson's disease; Schizophrenia. It was concluded that, according to the current evidence and in general, it is indeed beneficial to encourage patients to be active and practice exercise. However, more rigorous studies are needed so that it is possible to implement physical training correctly and effectively in the therapeutic tables of patients.KEYWORDS: Physical Activity; Exercise; Mental Health; Disorders; Benefits2023-06-152029-06-13T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesishttps://hdl.handle.net/10316/111311https://hdl.handle.net/10316/111311TID:203450434porPires, Natália Sofia Fernandesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-01-09T01:21:02Zoai:estudogeral.uc.pt:10316/111311Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T01:30:46.313417Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
