The project work “Quarta Parede: As duas narrativas performáticas que as contrainte provocam na execução e leitura dos livros de artista”, which brings together two parts: theoretical and practical, emerges from the idea that the artists’ book can integrate and provoke as an object a performative narrative. In what ways can an artists’ book include a performance? And what performative actions (a set of movements that a performance comprises) can it provoke in the reader? These are two starting questions that are intended to be answered along the theoretical framing and exemplified through the MA’s practical project. The theoretical part comprises the investigation of the objects of study: the artists’ book and the contraintes. The clarification of the concept and historical contextualization not only allows us to see the growth of an artistic practice but also its potentialities. The artists’ book is more than a simple vehicle to communicate a certain idea, it is a medium that in its essence - form and structure - articulates the artists’ message. For its realization the artist may, in his creative process, propose to fulfill a series of restrictions, known as contraintes. As such, an object that relates these two concepts is made real through the authors’ artistic practice: an artists’ book that includes her direct interventions, as well as a reading proposal in which a series of predetermined actions are implicit. The statement that the artists’ book can integrate and provoke performative actions through a narrative is fulfilled, whether in the act of performing the contrainte or in the sequence of actions during the reading.
