Resumo: Main goal was to use the artistic education as a complementary training practice for persons with mental illness. This research focused on the artistic education in two differentiated environments: inside the institution, within a plastic arts room, and within a home environment, making use of the project “Art goes home”. Two patients with mental illness (schizophrenia) are the subjects of this study during twelve years of expressive drawing and tile painting. The study describes an artistic education approach based in the experimentation and constant repetition through the observation in a creative perspective; the creativity as a way of a personal expression and the importance of the author recognition (authorship) are highly valuable and has shown an utter importance. Although the work isn’t an investigation in Art Therapy, the author concluded that certain benefits exist and that there are clear improvements on the life quality of these patients at artistic, personal, social and therapeutic levels
