Streptococcus agalactiae infection with multiple site involvement – a clinical case with a favourable outcome

Resumo: The authors describe a clinical case of unilateral endopthalmitis, septic arthritis, pleural empyema and celullitis, in a 47-year-old diabetic patient with a Stretopcoccus agalactiae bacteraemia.Infection with group B Streptococci has been, until fairly recently, a rare occurrence in adults, presenting mainly in women in the puerperal period and in neonates. A rising incidence of serious sepsis caused by this agent has been noted over the last years, principally in elderly patients or in patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. The clinical picture of endopthalmitis and/or pleural involvement, as documented in the case presented, are considered to be rare sites of involvement by this organism.

Nos últimos anos tem-se, contudo, registado uma incidência crescente de casos graves de sépsis por este agente, principalmente em doentes idosos ou portadores de doenças crónicas, como a diabetes mellitus.
