Comparative study between Contrasted Spectral Mammography and Breast Magnetic Resonance

Resumo: The frequent cases of breast cancer diagnosis in today's society make its early diagnosis essential. Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM-Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography) allows the tumour to be detected at an early stage of the disease. This pioneer technology at the Santarém District Hospital (SDH) is already a routine exam in the United States of America. The aim of this study is to address the benefits and advantages of CESM in relation to Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (BMRI), a method used in traditional diagnosis, which provides additional information not obtained in mammography. Through literature review, we evaluated the technical quality of CESM compared to BMRI. It is concluded in this study that the CESM is a useful tool in the diagnosis of breast cancer, with similar acuity to the BMRI.

A mamografia é o método de eleição para o rastreio da patologia mamária. A Mamografia Espectral com Contraste (CESM-Contrast-enhanced spectral mamografhy) permite que o tumor seja detetado ainda numa fase inicial da doença. Esta nova tecnologia pioneira no Hospital Distrital de Santarém (HDS) é um exame já de rotina nos Estados Unidos da América. O objetivo deste estudo é abordar os benefícios e vantagens do CESM em relação à Ressonância Magnética Mamária (RMM), método utilizado no diagnóstico tradicional, que fornece informações adicionais não obtidas em Mamografia. Através da revisão da literatura avaliámos a qualidade técnica do CESM comparativamente à RMM.
