Resumo: This thesis aims to understand what the two crafts of the theme chosen for this work are, and how architecture and shipbuilding are related. Assuming that both architecture and shipbuilding have points of contact and study in common, what are these points? How did these points of contact develop the two crafts together? Architecture and shipbuilding are two areas of human activity that have complexities that are very specific to the environment in which they operate. While naval construction deals mainly with boats and ships, and its main obstacle is to overcome maritime navigation, and the contact between sea and land, architecture, in turn, is concerned with the order and occupation of the territory, and its contact with the sea. They therefore appear to be two areas that are complementary in the nature of problems and obstacles they face, and both are profoundly affected by the force of nature. However, in the same way that they are distinct areas in terms of the main obstacles to overcome, and means that they intend to master in a passive or more active manner, the opinion of this work is that due to the study and observation of nature, the human condition and it's different areas of activity, architecture and shipbuilding have shared techniques and principles of construction, design and organization of spaces and measurements, throughout history. This dissertation sets out to explore the evolution of this relationship, with a look at the Portuguese case and it's surrounding context over time, and with the passing of history, to introduce a global vision on the topic. From this point of global relationship, it is possible to establish a research base on which to analyze the relationship between the two disciplines, categorizing different levels of inspiration and interpretation, based on the works, interviews, articles and speeches of several architects who explored different links between architecture and maritime culture.
