The role of journalism in combating fake news: the case of the last day of the 2019 election campaign in Portugal

Resumo: | This article reflects on the role of journalism in the deconstruction of fake news propaganda that came out in the media on the last day of the 2019 parliamentary election campaign in Portugal. We collected news items carried by the Portuguese media and contextualised this media coverage with regard to the impact of disinformation on confidence in the news with the help of data collated as part of the Digital News Report project. We found that journalistic scrutiny, aided by the characteristics of the Portuguese media system, might have contributed to a zero effect of this fake news on the election results, unlike what happened in elections in other countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom and Brazil. |

Se recopilaron las noticias de los medios portugueses, contextualizando la cobertura mediática en el contexto del impacto de la desinformación en la confianza en las noticias, con la ayuda de datos recopilados en el marco del proyecto Digital News Report. Se concluyó que el escrutinio periodístico, ayudado por las características del sistema mediático portugués, pudo haber contribuido a un impacto nulo de esta falsa noticia en el resultado electoral, en contraste con lo observado en actos electorales en otros países, es decir en el Estados Unidos, Reino Unido y Brasil.Cet article réfléchit sur le rôle du journalisme dans la déconstruction d’une fausse nouvelle, de contenu propagandiste, qui a été médiatisée le dernier jour de la campagne des législatives de 2019 au Portugal. Des informations des médias portugais ont été récoltées, en contextualisant la couverture médiatique dans le cadre de l’impact de la désinformation sur la confiance dans les nouvelles, à l’aide des données recueillies dans le cadre du projet Digital News Report. Il a donc été conclu que le contrôle journalistique, adjuvé par les caractéristiques du système médiatique portugais, aura pu contribuer à l’impact nul de cette fausse nouvelle sur les résultats électoraux, contrairement à ce qui a été observé dans des actes électoraux dans d’autres pays, notamment aux Etats-Unis, au Royaume-Uni et au Brésil.Este artigo reflete sobre o papel do jornalismo na desconstrução de uma notícia falsa, de teor propagandístico, mediatizada no último dia da campanha para as legislativas de 2019, em Portugal. Procedeu-se à recolha de notícias veiculadas nos órgãos de comunicação social portugueses, contextualizando a cobertura mediática no quadro do impacto da desinformação na confiança em notícias, com o auxílio de dados coligidos no âmbito do projeto Digital News Report.
