Resumo: The noise levels made by clinical handpieces and laboratory engines are the main descriptors of acoustical comfort in learning spaces in a dental medicine school. The aim of this work is the acoustic characterization of five different teaching spaces at the University of Porto Dental Medicine School (FMDUP) by measure and analysis of the noise levels using the parameters LAeq, LAEP,d and NC. The acoustic environment in the practical classes is characterized by high noise levels (in general, between 61 and 88 dBA) that degrade the quality of these places for their main purpose regarding attentiveness and speech intelligibility. The measured values showed daily exposure noise levels higher than the legal limits, which can make very possible the appearance of hearing loss with time. The reduction of these noise levels is then a fundamental objective to pursuit and some suggestions are presented to diminish up to 12 dB(A) the acoustic environment.
