Resumo: This paper aims to analyze the translation process of an excerpt of Oksana Marafioti’s memorialistic narrative, American Gypsy, published in the anthology Immigrant Voices – Volume II in 2015 from English to Portuguese. To do so, we have based on the theories of free and literal translation (Souza, 1998, & Bezerra, 2012), and on the idea that the translation process is a “creative act” (Bezerra & Britto, 2012). Therefore, we introduce the most appropriate translation examples for analysis, demonstrating how we chose each translation, the options and the difficulties encountered, always respecting the original text and the possible meanings of translation from English to Portuguese.
