Memory has always been linked to art history and historical shifts in the study of memory had a direct impact on the history of painting. Painting was based on stories and served to make those stories memorable. Since then there have been numerous inventions which brought painting to be declared dead over and over again. Although in contemporary art painting is no longer obliged to be of a narrative nature, this tradition continues. Looking at the work of two contemporary painters, Rosa Loy and Mamma Andersson, who paint their own personal narratives we can see that memory and locations continue to be central for narrative painting. These two painters clearly rooted in the painting traditions of their countries, have a strong sense of place, and take advantage of their gendered experiences to narrate memories. Their work links locations, storytelling and memories to painting. In so doing they take tradition and use it for their own purposes, creating contemporary perspectives with a technology and tradition from the past. In my own practical work my focus is also on memory locations. Taking two distinct periods of my life, I divided my project into two series. Both are dealing with memories and locations, contrasting the emotional side of remembering with the facts. There is information we remember, and this is not malleable, but memory related to emotions is alive and changes according to context. The paintings created for these series were a search for a way to combine facts with sensory experience, or to paint a representative image which does not illustrate a story, but leaves an emotional trace related to that storyGamito, Maria João, 1956-Repositório da Universidade de LisboaHorta, Maia Schmidt, 1974-2013-03-04T10:37:37Z20112011-01-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisimage/jpegapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10451/7881enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2023-11-08T15:51:23Zoai:repositorio.ul.pt:10451/7881Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-19T21:32:34.690767Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
