Resumo: This research focuses on the study of Performance Art as an independent art form, part of the Contemporary Art, casting a glance at its development over the 2nd half of the twentieth century, its transformations, goals, its integral parts and characteristics. It also emphases on issues such as the sociocultural role of Contemporary Art and Performance Art; the relationship between performer and spectator; the importance of the body being the mean of transmitting artistic expressions and in which way Performance Art is included in Artistic Education, pointing out the significance of passing knowledge and understandings to the next generations, the awakening of physical and mental consciousness, the sense of here and now and the challenge. From this study and in order to address the lack of accessibility and perception of Performance Art to all individuals, we developed an education proposal, embodied in an artistic residency under Non-Formal Education (understanding its strengths and characteristics) to support individuals with or without artistic preparation to express themselves according Performance Art’s features. In the course of the activities and exercises, it is likely that the learners develop a sense of community through co-operative work and daily tasks and that they increase their resilience through the individual work of self-discovery and physical, mental and spiritual refinement, in order to extend the notion of Performance Art and their role as artists and individuals, as an integral part of society
